The Legend of Toba Lake
Once upon a time, there was a man named Toba who lived in North Sumatra. He lived alone in a small hut and supported himself by farming and fishing. One day, while he was fishing, he caught a big golden fish. To his surprise, the fish turned into a beautiful woman.
Toba fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. The woman agreed, but on one condition: Toba must never tell anyone that she was once a fish. Toba promised to keep the secret. They got married and later had a son named Samosir.
A few years later, Samosir was asked by his mother to bring lunch to his father in the field. On the way, Samosir was very hungry and ate his father’s food. When Toba found out, he got very angry and shouted, "You son of a fish!"
Samosir cried and ran home to tell his mother. The mother was very sad because Toba had broken his promise. She told Samosir to run to the highest hill. Soon, a big earthquake happened, and heavy rain fell for days. The area was flooded and became a huge lake, now known as Lake Toba. The mother turned back into a fish, and the son became the island in the middle, Samosir Island.
